Legitimate Unemployment - Hong Kong
Hello! Welcome to my little travel blog for my two week trip through the first half of May in 2026! I’ll be spending a little more than a week in Hong Kong and a little less than a week in Singapore. I’ve never really traveled before, and definitely haven’t traveled solo, so my first leg in Hong Kong is gonna be an exciting little trip. I’m meeting up with some friends in Singapore so I don’t have to be along the entire time I’m out here :)

Hello!
My flight in was looooooong. I left my house around 10am on April 30th and landed on May 2nd at 6am, through a +15 hour time difference. Even without that, it still took me almost 24 hours to get from my house to Hong Kong.

All Good!

Actively Dying
Exhausting.
Luckily, or unluckily maybe, I’m meeting up with my friend Zac the first dayI get there so I can speedrun overcoming jetlag and have him show me around the city a bit.
Food
I had a truly mixed experience with food. There was a massive range of prices within really small areas, way too many options, and it always felt like I was making the wrong choice with what I actually wanted.

Dim Sum from The Steam Hut in Tsuen Wan
I got dim sum with Zac on the first day. This one was great! I don’t remember what everything was but the two black buns were quite sweet and filled with egg yolk. Absolutely delicious!

These beef noodles I got later in the trip weren’t so great. They came out really fast, which is worth some points, but they didn’t taste very good and didn’t look that good either. Tsim Sha Tsui was just constantly mixed like that.

Omelette from Island Workbench on Cheung Chau

Cha Chaan Teng from Red Tea in Tsim Sha Tsui

A ton of different skewers from Skewer Kitchen in Tsuen Wan

Way too much food that I got with Zac
Most of these things were pretty good. I really didn’t like cha chaan teng, but it’s hard to beat $10 for lunch. They had a really good walk up bakery window with pineapple buns here, but the food I got inside was a little more than underwhelming. Everything else here was quite good though!
Places
Believe it or not, I also got to spend quite a bit of time walking around Hong Kong and just looking at stuff. One of the first things I did was go to the Palace Museum with Zac. I was borderline delirious when I went since I haad just gotten off the plane that morning and we had already done so much.

The Cube. (it holds big seals)
This cube was pretty great. Really nicely designed and carved, and it has this weird energy that just makes me think about why the cube is like that.

The Avenue of Stars, at night feat. Me

Hong Kong Park

Spotted at Victoria Peak
There was just so much stuff to go see. Lots of it was cool at night, and it was also a lot cooler and a little bit easier to get around. Local Hong Kong is super busy at night but the touristy spots tend to ease up a bit. They’re still really nice to visit!
Cheung Chau was my favourite spot to just experience on Hong Kong. It offered a very welcome rest from the speed of the city, and was small enough that I felt like I could see a lot of it and be happy about it in an afternoon.

And of course, an honorable mention to all the liminal spaces I got stuck in trying to find game stores to play magic at:

I did find them eventually but it was a little unnerving trying to navigate all these industrial complexes in the meantime.
That’s all for now. Thanks for reading, I’ll give a Singapore update next week!
